What is J-STORE?

J-STORE (JST Science Technology Research Result Database for Enterprise Development) is a charge-free database to provide the general public, widely through the Internet, with the research results of universities and public research institutes that were collected by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), as well as with the research results of basic research, etc. of JST. The purpose is to technologically transfer research results to enterprises, and to encourage the industrialization of the research results. JST provides the under-mentioned information. When users utilize J-STORE, please observe the terms of J-STORE service.

  • Q1. What kind of data is available on this site?
    A. Information such as licensable unexamined patent data from the research results obtained at JST, universities and public research institutes, etc. If permission is granted from the information provider, there are cases where unpublished patent data is also included.
  • Q2. What kind of data is “unpublished patent data”?
    A. Patent information which has been filed for application, but yet to be published by the Patent Office since they have not undergone the year and a half process. In this site, outline of patents (a small portion of the application) which each information provider considers as harmless in its disclosure are available.
  • Q3. Other than JST, what other organizations are the information providers?
    A. More than 160 organizations including universities throughout Japan, Technology Licensing Organizations (TLOs), public research institutions and independent administrative agencies provide the data. We are making further efforts to persuade new organizations one by one to join us, which have not yet participated in providing data.
  • Q4. How much does it cost to use this information?
    A. There is no charge for searching the database or browsing the information. There is also no bothersome registration of any sort. (Also no cost is borne by the information provider to install the data on the site. » Refer to Q14.)
  • Q5. How often is the data updated?
    A. Normally once a week.
  • Q6. How should one inquire about the information on this site?
    A. An inquiry form is made available on the site for each individual information. (Inquiries are sent to either the information provider or JST)
  • Q7. What if one wants to know more about the unpublished patent data?
    A. Consult the contact (information provider or JST) shown in the inquiry of each individual case on the site. If JST holds the unpublished patent, JST will disclose the patent information on the condition that a confidentiality agreement is concluded. After that, there is an obligation to report the progress and results to JST within 90 days.
  • Q8. How does one obtain permission to conduct development or obtain a license?
    A. Consult the contact (information provider or JST) shown in the inquiry of each individual case on the site.

    ※1 “ Development Mediation”: JST mediating between the researcher and business by finding a business partner who will face the challenges of developing new technology on the research results from universities and public laboratories and research institutions to conclude a license.

  • Q9. How does one go about providing data to this site?
    A. In this site, we accept patents from public research institutions (henceforth institutions) and universities, who wish to match the business needs for commercial use. As to which patent is selected is left up to the decision of the information provider. JST will only include the patents at the request of the providers. For those interested in providing patent information, please contact the following:

  • Q10. Who responds to the inquiries about the information provided?
    A. The contact (either the information provider or JST) for each individual display in the site is responsible. There is no need for the information provider to report to JST about how the inquiries were handled.
  • Q11. What if the information provider wants to avoid direct contact with business?
    A. At the request of the information provider, JST can act as the primary contact. (However, a different rule applies in the case JST acts as mediator. »Refer to Q8.)
  • Q12. Can the information provider freely select the contents of the information that will be entered?
    A. As for unpublished patent information, the only mandatory item is the name of the invention. Other items (such as the application number, outline of invention, name of inventor) can be selected freely. As an example, you can purposely omit the name of the inventor to avoid direct contact from business.
    As for the unexamined patent data, JST will prepare the data entries based on the Patent Office’s Official Gazettes. Presently, there is no way to freely select the data to be entered.
  • Q13. What do you mean by disclosing “unpublished patent data”?
    A.The Japanese Patent Office discloses patents after filing its application a year and a half later. However, in this site, “a slight portion” of the application contents will be disclosed during this unpublished patent data period. (If further information is requested, we ask each institution to be responsible. »Refer to Q7.)
  • Q14. Will there be any cost involved in entering the information?
    A. No cost whatsoever is required in entering the information. Also, the necessary formalities, etc are also extremely simple. (No cost is necessary for the general public to use the site, too. »Refer to Q4.)
  • Q15. If a license contract is concluded with the patent held by the information provider due to the usage of this site, is it necessary to pay any referral fees to JST?
    A. No referral fees are necessary at all.
    (However, in the case where JST acts as mediator upon the request of the institution beforehand, a commission of part of the license will be deducted.)
