発明の概要(英語) Formation of highly-oriented, arranged carbon nanotubes from an organic liquid, comprises: (1) forming a thin film or island-like particles comprising a metal element on a substrate; (2) exposing the deposited substrate to hydrogen plasma; and (3) heating this substrate to a fixed temperature in an organic solvent.
Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) synthesis device for the highly-oriented, arranged carbon nanotubes, which comprises: (a) a tank for storing organic solvent; (b) a means for cooling the solvent to below its boiling point; (c) a condensing means for returning the vapor of the solvent to the liquid phase; (d) a substrate holding device which has an electrode for supplying current to the substrate in the solvent; (e) an inert gas introduction means for removing air; and (f) a sealing means for preventing vapor generation of the solvent by sealing the liquid tank; and (2) highly-oriented, arranged carbon nanotubes.
特許請求の範囲(英語) [claim1]
1. A method of synthesizing oriented, aligned carbon nanotubes comprising the steps of: forming a substrate (3) with a buildup thereon of a film or fine insular particles composed of at least one metallic element; and exposing said substrate (3) having said buildup to a hydrogen plasma; characterized by heating said substrate exposed to the hydrogen plasma in an organic liquid (10) to a predetermined temperature whereby oriented, aligned carbon nanotubes are synthesized.

2. The method of synthesizing oriented, aligned carbon nanotubes as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said substrate (3) is a Si substrate.

3. The method of synthesizing oriented, aligned carbon nanotubes as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said at least one metallic element of which said buildup is composed is one or more elements selected from the group which consists of Fe, Co and Ni.

4. The method of synthesizing oriented, aligned carbon nanotubes as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said organic liquid (10) is alcohol.

5. The method of synthesizing oriented, aligned carbon nanotubes as set forth in claim 4, characterized in that said alcohol is methanol or ethanol.

6. The method of synthesizing highly oriented, aligned carbon nanotubes as set forth in claim 2, characterized in that said step of heating to a predetermined temperature comprises heating by passing an electric current through said Si substrate.

7. An apparatus for synthesizing oriented, aligned carbon nanotubes, comprising: a liquid tank (1) for retaining an organic liquid (10); a cooling means (2) for cooling said organic liquid (10) so as to maintain it at a temperature lower than a boiling point thereof a substrate holding means (5) for holding a substrate (3); an inert gas inlet means (8) for removing air from said apparatus; and a tank sealing means (9) for sealing said liquid tank (1) to prevent said organic liquid (10) becoming gaseous in phase from flying off, characterized in that the apparatus further comprises a condensing means (7) for condensing said organic liquid (10) becoming gaseous in phase into its original liquid phase for return into said liquid tank (1), and the substrate holding means (5) having an electrode means (4) for passing an electric current through said substrate (3) in said organic liquid (10).
