Abstract An artificial knee 1 is provided with: an insert member 2 that is buried in a portion of the joint surface of the medial condyle MC or lateral condyle LC of the tibia T; and a bridge member 3 that is placed underneath the insert member 2 and that has a length that allows anchoring of both ends of the bridge member to the cortical bone of the tibia T.
Outline of related art and contending technology BACKGROUND ART
The knee joint is a joint formed by the femur, tibia, and patella. In the knee joint, the articular cartilage at the distal end of the femur and the proximal end of the tibia and the meniscus therebetween act as a cushion, so that the knee joint can operate smoothly.
However, if the knee cartilage wears and the menisci are damaged due to obesity, aging, or the like, not only will the cushioning between the distal end of the femur and the proximal end of the tibia be lost, but also deformation of the knee joint will occur and progress over time. In addition, when rheumatoid arthritis or knee injury occurs, the knee joint deforms. When such deformation of the knee joint occurs (osteoarthritis), the knee joint cannot operate smoothly, and the patient may experience severe distress when walking or the like, and walking may be difficult.
Total knee replacement surgery (TKA) has been employed as a method for treating such osteoarthritis. This total knee replacement procedure is a technique in which the distal end of the femur and the proximal end of the tibia are resected and the resected portion is replaced with a knee prosthesis. A large number of patients are currently undergoing total knee replacement procedures, which have effects such as being able to remove pain and enable normal walking, thereby increasing the satisfaction of patients. Furthermore, a large number of knee prostheses for use in total replacement procedures for knee prostheses have also been developed (see Patent Documents 1 and 2).
In recent years, unicondylar replacement surgery (UKA) has also been employed in which only a portion of the knee joint is replaced with a knee joint prosthesis. Patent Document 3 described below discloses a partial unicondylar system for a unicondylar knee replacement procedure.
