The present invention pertains to a bone marrow-directing drug delivery material that includes at least one fine particle, wherein the fine particle includes an anionic moiety on a surface of the particle.
Also disclosed are uses of the material set forth herein for the prevention, treatment, or diagnosis of a disease of bone, cartilage, bone marrow, or a joint.
Also disclosed are methods of preventing, treating, or diagnosing a disease of bone, cartilage, bone marrow, or a joint in a subject, involving administering to the subject a pharmaceutically effective amount of the material of the present invention.
Scope of claims [claim1]
1. A drug delivery material for use in targeting bone marrow, the material comprising at least one fine particle comprising: - (1) an anionic moiety on the surface of the particle, said anionic moiety being a carboxylic acid group represented by formula (2):

HOOCR **3-CO-HNCH(COOR **4)CH 2CH 2COOR **4

wherein R **3 represents-CH 2CH 2- or -CH(CH 3)CH 2-, and R **4 represents a C 12 - C 22 alkyl group; and - (2) a water soluble polymer being a polyethylene glycol
and wherein the at least one fine particle further comprises a drug bound to the at least one fine particle.

2. The material of claim 1, wherein the fine particle has a diameter of 0.02 to 5 micron m, in particular wherein the material is further defined as comprising a plurality of fine particles with an average diameter of 0.02 to 5 micron m.

The material of any of claims 1 to 2, wherein the at least one fine particle is defined as comprising a water soluble polymer, in particular wherein the water soluble polymer is bound to a surface of at least one fine particle wherein the water soluble polymer is polyethylene glycol, the material preferably comprising: a) 1 to 50 mol% of an amphipathic compound of formula (2):

HOOCR **3-CO-HNCH(COOR **4)CH 2CH 2COOR **4

wherein R **3 is -CH 2CH 2- and R **4 is a C 10 - C 22 alkyl group, and b) 0.5 to 4.8 mol% of an amphipathic compound comprising polyethylene glycol as its hydrophilic portion, wherein at least one fine particle has an average particle diameter of 100 to 500 nm.

4. The material of any of claims 1 to 3, wherein at least one fine particle further comprise a drug bound to the at least one fine particle.

5. The material according to any of claims 1 to 4 for use in the prevention, treatment, or diagnosis of a disease of bone, of cartilage, of a joint, or of bone marrow.

6. The material for use according to claim 5, wherein the pharmaceutical is in a dosage form allowing administration of the material in an amount of 0.1 to 500 mg per kg of body weight.

7. The material for use according to claim 5 or 6, wherein the pharmaceutical is for administration to a human.
