Abstract A composite solid strong acid comprising, a solid acid and a carbon material, wherein said solid acid is obtained by heat treating of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to which the carbon material is blended in concentrated sulfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid, transforming said polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to a solid acid which is insoluble in a polar solvent by condensation and sulfonation further compositing with said carbon material.
Scope of claims [claim1]
1. A method of condensing and sulphonating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, comprising heat treating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in concentrated sulphuric acid or fuming sulphuric acid at a temperature T of 200 deg.C 450 deg.C, to thereby prepare a solid acid which is insoluble in a polar solvent, wherein the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are selected from naphthalene, anthracene, perylene, coronene and mixtures thereof, tar, pitch, fuel oil and asphalt containing a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in which two or more aromatic rings are condensed.

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the temperature T for heat treatment is 200 deg.C <= T <= 350 deg.C.

3. A solid acid obtainable by a method according to either claim 1 or claim 2.

4. A method of condensation and sulfonation which method comprises heat treating a blend of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and a carbon material in concentrated sulphuric acid or fuming sulphuric acid at a temperature of T of from 200 deg.C <= T <= 450 deg.C to provide a composite solid strong acid which is insoluble in a polar solvent, wherein the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are selected from naphthalene, anthracene, perylene, coronene and mixtures thereof, tar, pitch, fuel oil and asphalt containing a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in which two or more aromatic rings are condensed, and wherein the carbon material is at least one selected from carbon black, acetylene black, activated carbon, carbon nano tube and fullerene.

5. A method according to claim 4, wherein the temperature T for heat treatment is 200 deg.C <= T <= 350 deg.C.

6. A composite solid strong acid obtainable by a method according to either claim 4 or claim 5.
