Provided is a two-dimensional photonic crystal laser wherein the symmetry level of a spot of laser light is high.
The two-dimensional photonic crystal laser comprises a two-dimensional photonic crystal (15) where a large number of different-refractive-index regions (cavities) (152A-152D) being the same in shape but different in a refractive index from a planar member (151) are arranged periodically in the planar member (151), and an active layer provided on a side of the two-dimensional photonic crystal, wherein each different-refractive-index region is provided at the lattice point of a lattice having the same period in at least two directions, each differtnet-refractive-index region has a shape that gives different feedback strengths in two directions of a basic inverse vector provided by the lattice, the two-dimensional photonic crystal has a super-cell (154); -based periodic structure including a plurality lattice points, and the sum of feedback strengths by all different-refractive-index regions (cavities) (152A-152D) in the super cell (154) is equalized in each of two directions of the basic inverse vector.
