WATER-ABSORBING AND LIQUID-ABSORBING POLYMER
[Problem] To provide an environmentally friendly and novel liquid-absorbing polymer that can be used as a material in place of a cross-linked polyacrylic acid copolymer, makes use of a natural product, and has an absorbency superior to conventional products with respect to solutions containing metal cations and fluids containing proteins. [Solution] This invention provides a water-absorbing and liquid-absorbing polymer with which it is possible to absorb solutions containing metal cations and fluids containing proteins, said polymer being obtained by cross-linking carboxymethyl cellulose salt, having a substitution degree of 0.65-1.4 and a weight-average molecular weight of 84,600-125,000, with an epoxy compound. For example, epichlorohydrin or ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether may be used as the epoxy compound. The present invention resolves problems such as waste disposal, while providing a water-absorbing and liquid-absorbing polymer with excellent practical utility.
