use thereof as a solid Lewis acid catalyst
and a method for conducting a chemical reaction in an aqueous solution using the solid Lewis acid catalyst. Amorphous hydrous titanium oxide, which functions as a Lewis acid, can be obtained by subjecting an organotitanium compound which can be hydrolyzed in an aqueous solution to form an oxide to reaction with both water and an acid or base catalyst. This Lewis acid catalyst exhibits excellent effect in various reactions including a reaction of forming hydroxymethylfurfural from glucose.
