Provided is a tool for friction stir processing with which tool abrasion is suppressed to a minimum and tool life is improved by exhibiting superior hardness, even at high temperatures. Also provided is a method for friction stir processing using the same. The tool for friction stir processing is formed from an Ni-based double diploid phase intermetallic compound alloy to which Re has been added. The Ni-based double diploid phase intermetallic compound alloy is preferably formed by casting, while gradually cooling, a melt containing each of the components of the alloy composition and is preferably heat treated after casting. Moreover, in the method for friction stir processing, a material to be processed is softened by the friction heat that generates when the tool for friction stir processing, while rotating, is pressed against the material to be processed.
