In a lithium ion secondary battery which uses a negative electrode active material that is mainly composed of SiOx that is decomposed into Si and SiO2, the negative electrode is configured so as to contain a mixture of first particles, which are composed of SiO-based particles that are composed of silicon oxide represented by SiOx (0.3 = x = 1.6), and second particles that are represented by LiMgPO4. Consequently, change in the volume during the charging and discharging can be reduced due to the second particles and excessive reaction with the electrolyte solution can be suppressed. As a result, the cycle characteristics are improved.
