The present invention provides a novel ligand for transition metal complexes which has not any substituent at either position ortho to phosphorus or arsenic and therefore can strongly coordinate to metals and which has an electron-withdrawing powder equivalent to that of a known highest-level ligand. This ligand consists of a compound which is represented by general formula (1): R1R2R3A or general formula (2): R1R2A-Y-AR3R4, and which has 15 to 110 carbon atoms in total. R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently a substituted pyridyl group that has electron-withdrawing groups, which may be different from each other, at both positions meta to A and that has hydrogen atoms at both positions ortho to A
and Y is a divalent group derived either from an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic compound which has 2 to 20 carbon atoms and which may be substituted or contain a heteroatom, or from ferrocene.
