This optical system (10) which is used for detecting viral particles is provided with: a light reflecting plate (5) having an elliptically shaped light transmitting part

a light source that shines light on the light reflecting plate

an objective lens (4) in which a convex surface thereof faces the reflective surface of the light reflecting plate (5)

and a detection unit (7) that detects light (9) that has passed through the light transmitting part. The light transmitting part has a circular shape when observed from the objective lens (4), and the radius of the circle has a length corresponding to the product of the numerical aperture and focal distance of the objective lens (4).
