Abstract

Carbon nanotubes are grown by supplying a starting material gas (30), which contains a carbon compound that serves as a starting material for carbon nanotubes, into a reaction container tube (14) in which a catalyst (26) for growing carbon nanotubes is contained. At this time, a halogen-containing gas (32) is additionally supplied into the reaction container tube (14) for the purpose of reducing the amount of carbon products such as amorphous carbon that are deposited on the surfaces of catalyst particles (44) separately from the carbon nanotubes due to the supply of the starting material gas (30). Consequently, long carbon nanotubes can be produced.
