Provided is a living radical polymerization catalyst that is inexpensive, has high activity, is environmentally friendly, and requires no radical initiator. A nonmetallic compound having an ionic bond with a halide ion is used as a catalyst for a living radical polymerization method. By using this catalyst, it is possible to obtain a polymer with a narrow molecular-weight distribution by making a monomer having a radical-reactive unsaturated bond undergo a radical polymerization reaction without the use of a radical initiator such as an organic peroxide or a diazo compound. Also, it is possible to drastically reduce the cost of living radical polymerization and prevent adverse effects (such as side reactions) caused by the use of a radical initiator. This invention has such advantages as that the catalyst has low toxicity, the amount of catalyst used is small, the catalyst has high solubility, the reaction conditions are mild, and the catalyst is odorless and not colored (no post-treatment is required for molded products). This invention is also far more environmentally friendly and has higher economic efficiency compared to conventional living radical polymerization methods. The catalyst can be applied to various monomers and enables the synthesis of high molecular weight polymers.
