Abstract

[Object] Provided is a cathode active material for a sodium secondary battery that has excellent alkali ion diffusivity, structural stability, and cycle characteristics, and a method for synthesizing same. [Solution] The cathode active material for a sodium secondary battery contains a molten solidified body or oxide glass satisfying the general formula of NaxMyP2O7 (M is at least one type of transition metal element selected from Cr, Fe, Mn, Co, and Ni, x is 1.20<=x<=2.10, and y is 0.95<=y<=1.60). Preferably, the cathode active material forms a crystal structure belonging to either one of triclinic space groups P1 and P1-.
