Abstract

Provided is a macroporous titanium compound monolith, and a method for manufacturing the same, that has controlled macropores and electron conductivity, and the framework of which is composed of oxygen-deficient titanium oxide, titanium oxynitride, or titanium nitride, which are titanium compounds other than titanium dioxide. In this method, the following are held in a container: a macroporous titanium dioxide monolith, having a co-continuous structure of a framework composed of titanium dioxide and macropores, and a metal with titanium-reducing ability. The container is made to have a vacuum atmosphere or an inert gas atmosphere. By heating the monolith and the metal, a vapor-phase reduction is initiated for stripping oxygen atoms from the titanium dioxide that constitutes the monolith, with the metal acting as an oxygen getter, to obtain a macroporous oxygen-deficient titanium oxide monolith having the following: a co-continuous structure of a framework composed of oxygen-deficient titanium oxide and the macropores

and electron conductivity based on the oxygen-deficient titanium oxide.
