PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having high luminous efficiency and high luminance, and capable of adjusting a luminous area and a luminous band.
SOLUTION: An organic quantum well structure is employed for a hole transport layer 4 of this element. The organic quantum well structure is formed by alternately stacking an organic material A having a wide energy gap and an organic material B having a narrow energy gap. An energy barrier of a hole is formed at the interface of the quantum well. The organic quantum well structure remarkably controls the moving speed of a hole carrier and realizes injection balance of electrons and the hole in the luminous area, thereby improving the luminous efficiency and luminance of the organic electroluminescent element. The organic material B having a narrow energy gap in the organic quantum well structure, when it is made of a dye C, has different luminous bands depending on the number of cycles of the organic quantum well in the hole transport layer. Accordingly, a composite luminous area of the electrons and the hole, and further, the luminous band of the luminescent element, are adjusted by controlling the number of cycles of the organic quantum trap in the hole transport layer.
