PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a living radical polymerization catalyst having high activity and gentle to environment.
SOLUTION: This catalyst for the living radical polymerization is provided by containing a central element selected from germanium, tin and antimony, and at least one halogen atom bonding to the central element. By performing the living radical polymerization of a monomer having a radically reactive unsaturated bond in the presence of the catalyst, it is possible to obtain a polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution. The catalyst has advantageous points such as low toxicity, low amount of use, high solubility, moderate reaction condition, without discoloring, without having smell (without requiring the post treatment of its molded article), etc., and therefore the method is markedly gentle to the environment and economically excellent as compared with those of conventional methods of the living radical polymerization.
