PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for typically determining a ship's orientation capable of detecting a target ship without using any acoustic nor magnetic means and of computing its relative orientation.
SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises; an electric field detector 10 which has a pair of electrodes 2-1, 2-2 and a pair of electrodes 2-3, 2-4 for detecting respective two-point potential differences on first and second axis lines intersecting perpendicularly, and has an electrode 2-5 at a point on a third axis line perpendicular to the above first and second axis lines; a potentiometer 4-1 which outputs a signal proportional to the potential difference of the pair of electrodes 2-1, 2-2; a potentiometer 4-2 which outputs a signal proportional to the potential difference of the pair of electrodes 2-3, 2-4; a composition circuit 3 which computes a composite potential of total four points of above electrodes; a potentiometer 4-3 which outputs a signal proportional to the potential difference between the composite potential and that of the electrode 2-5; a horizontal orientation computing circuit 5 which computes a relative orientation of the ship in the horizontal plane from outputs of the potentiometers 4-1, 4-2; and an elevation angle computing circuit 7 which computes an elevation angle of the ship from outputs of the potentiometers 4-1, 4-2 and 4-3.
