PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus which enables generation of an electron beam having high energy and high electric current.
SOLUTION: An electron beam generating apparatus 10 includes helical coils 22, 24 housed in an annular vacuum container, and a confinement zone is formed by an annular magnetic face formed by the helical coils. Plasma is confined within the zone. The plasma is accelerated by an induced electromotive force from a solenoid coil 20, to generate runaway electrons of high energy. A pair of extraction coils 36u, 36d are arranged over the whole circumference of the vacuum container, i.e., the helical coils. A magnetic field directed outside is formed, by generating a first magnetic line from the helical coil to extract the runaway electrons to the outside. For the purpose of preventing the confinement zone from becoming small due to the influence of the first magnetic line from the extraction coil, a pair of cancellation coils 38u, 38d for generating a second magnetic line is provided to control the shape of the confinement magnetic face.
