PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbon material for an electric double layer capacitor polarizable electrode, which can obtain high electrostatic capacitance.
SOLUTION: A method for producing a carbon material for an electric double layer capacitor polarizable electrode includes the steps of: mixing a compound containing either or both of phosphorus and nitrogen with a carbon precursor containing saccharide as a main component; and carbonizing the mixture at a temperature of 500-1000°C under an inactive atmosphere. The compound containing either or both of phosphorus and nitrogen is mixed in an amount satisfying a condition of 0.5-3.0 parts by mass in terms of phosphorus content and 2.0-6.0 parts by mass in terms of nitrogen content with respect to 100 parts by mass of saccharide. Saccharide is either or both of starch and cellulose, and the compound containing phosphorus and nitrogen is phosphoric guanidine.
