PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photonic crystal light-emitting diode which does not easily deteriorate for a long period and has high energy efficiency and luminous efficiency.
SOLUTION: In the two-dimensional photonic crystal light-emitting diode, an active layer has a two-layer structure of a first active layer 12 emitting light of a short wavelength side and a second active layer 13 emitting light of a long wavelength side, and a two-dimensional photonic crystal structure is formed in the second active layer 13 and a second semiconductor layer 14 laminated thereupon. The first active layer 12 is free of a decrease in luminous efficiency by employing such a structure. Meanwhile, the second active layer 13 is improved in light extraction efficiency by providing a hole 18, but non-light-emission recoupling increases and luminous efficiency decreases. Light of high luminous efficiency, emitted from the first active layer 12, is absorbed by the second active layer 13 and light excitation is caused to emit light again by the second active layer 13 with high efficiency. Consequently, long-wavelength light of high luminous efficiency is emitted from the hole 18 with high efficiency.
