PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a symbol recognition technique suitable for hardware processing.
SOLUTION: A symbol recognition device (10) comprises: an image memory (12) that stores a binarized image to be recognized; multiple histogram calculation units (161) that receive input of an image of each subregion of a region to be recognized in the binarized image, and calculate a frequency distribution of a pixel in a prescribed color, with respect to each line or each row in the subregion; multiple run-length determination units (162) that receive input of the image of each subregion of the region to be recognized and determines whether or not the subregion has a line or a row which consists of the pixels in the prescribed color and has a length equal to or longer than a prescribed length; a control unit (14) that inputs subregion pixel information, which is read out by scanning the binarized image stored in the image memory, into the histogram calculation units and the run-length determination units; and a determination unit (18) that determines a symbol included in the binarized image, on the basis of calculation results of the histogram calculation units and determination results of the run-length determination units.
