PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode for use in synthesis by electrolytic reduction, which uses an inexpensive material with low toxicity and can synthesize an organic compound at a high yield with high selectivity.
SOLUTION: The electrode for use in the synthesis by electrolytic reduction is an electrode that contains an electroconductive mayenite-type compound (for instance, [Ca24Al28O64]4+(4e-)) in which a part or all of free oxygen ions in the mayenite-type compound are replaced by electrons, at least in the surface of the electrode, and is used as a cathode 3 for use in the synthesis of the organic compound by electrolytic reduction. Examples of the synthesis of the organic compound by electrolytic reduction includes a reaction of synthesizing hydroxybenzoin by electrolytically reducing benzaldehyde and a reaction of synthesizing chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) by electrolytically reducing R-113.
